Vegetarian Food Tour of Amsterdam

Sunday, September 10, 2017

Heading to Europe as vegetarians, we had some concerns. While Sydney is in our eyes one of the most diverse places for foodies, we wondered if Europe would cater to vegetarians in the same way , but making our first stop at Amsterdam put all our concerns to rest.
We made the most of the Dutch specialties on offer and being the foodies that we are, even came back a second time to get a last taste of this special city.

If you’re looking to go on your own food tour of the capital, be sure to stop by these places:
1. Try the different types of cheese on offer - Cheese is available in abundance and variety in nearly every corner of Amsterdam but we’d recommend giving the Cheese Museum a visit. Not only will you get to try tonnes of different varieties (for free) but you’ll also learn something while you’re at it! Alternatively, if you’re not able to visit or are simply left wanting more, pick up some goodies to take with you for the rest of the trip from specialty stores like the Amsterdam Cheese Company or Golden Age Cheese.
2. Pancake House - I’m not the biggest fan of pancakes but the Pancake House was the place that changed my mind. Tucked up in a cosy shop, this restaurant offers the best sweet and savoury Dutch pancakes, a much thinner variety than their American counterparts. We tried it on our first day in Europe and returned once again on the last day of our trip and boy am I glad. Flavoursome and delicious, the only thing I’d say to watch out for are those damned Dutch stairs!
3. Chipsy King - Up until my visit to Chipsy King, I thought we Aussies did chips pretty well. The Dutch though take things to a whole new level. I’d encourage you to try the French fries with mayo and peanut butter sauce – a typical Dutch combination I dream of till date. We picked up ours while roaming the busy streets of Dam Square, the day after Christmas and it was the perfect thing to munch on while getting some boxing day shopping done. It was a shame we didn’t get to try them again!
4. De Bolhoed - If you’re looking for a place to eat in Jordaan, you’ll be hard-pressed to find a place cuter and quirkier than De Bolhoed, a cosy canal-side vegetarian café. We ordered the vegetarian version of the Snert soup, a Dutch specialty and some open melts to go with it. While the soup and meals were delicious, what caught my eye was the gigantic artwork of my favourite Indian film, Devdas, hanging inside. Add some indoor plants and colourful walls and I was sold.
5. Try the European Christmast Market experience - As we mentioned in the last post, we made our trip to the Van Gogh museum late one evening. When leaving we came across a charming little Christmas market against the backdrop of Rijksmuseum. Now we’ve been to our fair share of local markets here in Sydney but the vibe was something else in Amsterdam. Ice skating, fairy lights and heaters to huddle by as we waited for our Chocomel and mulled wine – both beverages you must try while in the city. And while all that was delicious, the Dutch Poffertjes deserve a special mention. Let’s just say whatever it is they serve in Australia in the name of this sweet treat is nothing in comparison to the fluffy goodness we had here. Either that or everything just tastes better when you’re freezing!
 6. Stroopwafles - A thin waffle oozing with caramel syrup, Stroopwafels were right on the top of my list to try. Sadly, as fate would have it we hunted for them everywhere and were about to leave the city disheartened until we finally spotted some at the train station and packed them with us for the journey to our next stop. I was recently reminiscing about them on Instagram and found out they sell some at IGA. If anyone’s looking for me, I’m over here munching on my stroopwafels.
7. Apple Pie and Coffee at Winkel 43 - The green and white striped shutters of Winkel 43 were an iconic image I associated with Amsterdam long before I landed in the city and seeing it in flesh only confirmed as much. We stopped by a few hours before our flight to Sydney and had the famous apple pie and our 4697th cup of Heisse Schokolade of the trip. Safe to say we headed home with our taste buds fully satisfied.

Amsterdam was a beautiful city that undoubtedly stole my heart. Although it’ll be fun to share all about where we headed next, part of me wishes I could go on and on about Dutch capital.

Stay tuned for more from our Europe travel diaries in the coming weeks!

  14. I was so excited when I saw this post! And I'm so glad the world is becoming so much more accommodating to vegetarians. We had similar concerns traveling to Italy this summer (hello land of cured meats!), but found SO many great places that had veg options.
We were recently looking at flights to Amsterdam, but weren't sure how much we'd be able to find out there for food. This post COMPLETELY changed our minds! Everything looks SO GOOD, especially the Pancake House and those FRIES. So thanks for that :). Amsterdam, here we come!
