What is Athleisure Wear

What is Athleisure Wear

There has been an alarming increase in people obsessed with fitness lately, you can see #fitspo Instagrams everywhere and it is quite impossible to have a day, where a conversation about being healthy and fit doesn't come up. If you want further evidence of this fitness takeover, you only have to take a look at the growing number of people hitting the gym, pilates, yoga or choosing to adopt a vegetarian, vegan, raw or paleo diets.

This influx of fitness and health junkies has also acted as a catalyst to another trend, this time of the sartorial variety. Not too long ago, I saw a parody video about people wearing gym clothes just about everywhere and I only need to hit a cafe for brunch to know it's really quite true. Gone are the days when wearing tights with a top was considered quite basic and wearing sneakers with a dress was seemingly reserved for the people not so tuned into the fashion runways.

Today, celebrities like Gigi Hadid and Kendall Jenner are ready to flaunt their washboard abs and perfectly toned calves in a pair of sexy Yoga pants, instigating an immediate response of #goals. While I always find myself at awe of these fitness goddesses, I'm not yet sold on the concept of wearing yoga pants everywhere or pairing them with non athletic clothing or even wearing your tracksuit (even if its VS) to brunch.

But one has to admit that with the rise of athlesiure we have entered a more inclusive phase of fashion where comfort isn't always inversely proportional to how 'fashion forward' a person is. It allows people like myself to spend a decent amount of money on a gorgeous pair of gym pants and know that I will make use out of it beyond the confines of my time on the treadmills. And of course, in this age of social media, knowing your photos in gym clothing and a pair of sneakers is still high on its level of 'instagramability' is a plus point.

Perhaps my most favorite consequence of the fitness rise has been the subtle incorporation of sportswear materials into your usual outfit piece. While I understand that as stylish your gym clothes may be, its not feasible to wear it to work (of course unless you work in the fitness industry or select retail stores) its fun to see the two areas of clothing inch a little closer. And while I'm all for the white sneaker trend (as evident above), they are best kept for the casual day out and not for hitting the gym. Everything is good in moderation and I believe this to be true of fashion trends as well. So while I endorse this closer bond between your usual clothes and athletic wear, the complete blurring of lines is not the best option.

  1. What great photos! Such color! Were you recently in Hong Kong? In my home? Come visit!

On the topic of yoga pants....don't! They're suited for the gym....or the yoga studio, or traveling back and forth. I still haven't got on board with that whole trend....just don't think I can. Call me old fashioned, I guess....but also maybe because I work in a high school, I see teens wearing them always...it's ridiculous.

Thanks for popping by my blog. See you again soon!

  3. Athleisure wear is my favorite, sure it might take some getting used to if athletic wear isn't your daily thing. As an athlete it is so refreshing to see the big athletic brand finally making their clothing more mainstream. I live in athletic clothes, so its cool to see that it is becoming more socially acceptable to wear my gear other than the gym. check out http://www.onwyattstyle.com for some of my athleisure styles

    1. OO, its great seeing different perspectives here with people all for activewear whilst others saying no to yoga pants. But I totally see your pant, it must be invaluable being an athlete.
